Chinese automakers used to launch a car at home, wait a year or two, and then think about export markets. Today's news shows how far that sequence has been compressed. XPeng has started shipping the Mona L05 around the world before its China launch, Chery's Luxeed is developing four SUVs that will not be sold in China at all, and GAC and Changan are already setting dates for taking their driver-assistance software abroad. Meanwhile, the sales data from Australia and smaller European markets shows Chinese models moving from niche to the top of the charts.
XPeng: Global First, China Second
XPeng said on Oct 26 that the Mona L05 has begun global shipments ahead of its China launch, with plans to sell it in 65 countries and regions. It did not disclose the size of the first shipment or delivery timing by market. Left- and right-hand-drive versions were developed in parallel, and XPeng put 660 vehicles through extreme-condition testing in 25 countries and regions, including cabin-noise tests in Germany, high-altitude powertrain tests in Mexico and reliability tests at 50°C in the UAE and -25°C in Norway. The L05 sits above the Mona L03, launched in July, and its China launch event is set for Oct 29. [CnEVPost]
The timing fits XPeng's broader overseas push. Its overseas sales passed 10,000 for the first time in September 2026, reaching 10,055 (+100.94% YoY), and Jan–Sep overseas sales of 59,479 made up 20.92% of total deliveries. At the Paris Motor Show, He Xiaopeng set a target of 1 million global sales a year by 2030, half of them in Europe.
XPeng is also building out the ecosystem around its cars. In Mexico, which it entered in spring 2026 with the G6 and G9, it is working with Electronity, a charging network run by Drivewatt México, to install more than 100 charging points: about 30 fast chargers by end-2026 and the remaining 70 by end-2027. XPeng owners get a 10% charging discount at participating stations for one year, and the station map will be added to XPeng's digital platforms. [electrive]
Luxeed Builds Cars for Markets Outside China
Chery's premium brand Luxeed, developed with Huawei, has set out plans to launch six NEV models abroad: the LLounge large MPV (V9 in China), the Stormax sporty SUV (RX in China) and four crossover SUVs. The LLounge and Stormax go first, with Australia among the first markets. The four SUVs, tentatively named 3, 5, 7 and 9, will not be sold in China and are being developed for overseas markets, with more details due next year. [CarNewsChina]
That is a notable step for a Chinese brand: rather than adapting domestic models, Luxeed is designing a product line around export demand. It fits Chery's overall scale abroad. The group exported 207,814 vehicles in September 2026 and 1,551,178 in Jan–Sep (+65.6% YoY), and says about 48% of its exports are built overseas this year.
Driver Assistance Is the Next Export
GAC International general manager Wei Haigang said 2027 will be the first year of Chinese driver assistance going fully global, with GAC starting in Europe and Southeast Asia. GAC says it has already deployed cloud infrastructure worldwide, has begun rolling out L2 driver assistance overseas, and is working with multinational suppliers such as Bosch and Valeo, as well as local partners, to adapt to each market's rules. [Yicai]
Changan is on a similar timeline. It plans to roll out its Tianshu highway NCA (navigation-assisted driving) overseas first in 2027, followed by city NCA, and will build local computing centers to close the data loop. [Yicai] The local computing point matters: driver-assistance systems need local road data to train and validate, and data rules differ from market to market, so Chinese automakers cannot simply ship their domestic stacks abroad.
From Niche to Top of the Charts
In Australia, BYD has delivered its 150,000th car, a Seal 6 Touring wagon, four years after entering the market and about six months after reaching 100,000. BYD is now Australia's second best-selling car brand, with more than 120 dealers nationwide, and expects over 150 sales and service dealers by end-2026 as it expands into regional towns across several states. [The Driven]
Smaller European markets tell the same story. In Serbia, BYD's Seal U sold 150 units in September 2026 for a 4.6% share, the first time a Chinese model has topped the Serbian monthly chart, while Chery's Tiggo 4 sold 107 units to rank 4th, its first-ever Serbian monthly top-10 finish. [BestSellingCarsBlog] In Moldova, Geely's EX5 sold 123 units for an 8.2% share, topping the model ranking for a sixth straight month, with the Coolray and Monjaro also in the top 10. [BestSellingCarsBlog] In Albania, SAIC's MG 5 ranked 2nd with 76 units and GAC's Aion i60 ranked 4th with 70 units. [BestSellingCarsBlog]
The volumes are small, but the pattern is clear: in markets where Chinese brands compete on price and equipment without heavy tariffs, they are now taking the top spots.
What to Watch
- Mona L05 launch on Oct 29: China pricing and any detail on first overseas delivery dates will show how quickly the global-first approach turns into sales.
- Driver assistance in 2027: GAC and Changan have set the year; the next question is which markets approve these systems first, and how local data and computing requirements shape the rollout.
[CnEVPost]
[electrive]
[CarNewsChina]
[The Driven]
[BestSellingCarsBlog]
